Abstract

An independent modular device that enhances reliability of another machine is disclosed and shown in Figure 1. The machine 10 can be, but is not limited to being, a copier or an electronic printer. The modular device 20 uses knowledge of the machine to intelligently interpret and initiate automated corrective actions when deviations from desired machine states occur. The modularity of the device allows the machine to function in a consistent manner with or without the device attached, enabling enhancements not reasonably included due to incomplete knowledge during machine and control system 25 design, such as failure modes and operating windows.

The modular device 20 uses knowledge of the machine to intelligently interpret and initiate automated corrective actions when deviations from desired machine states occur. The modularity of the device allows the machine to function in a consistent manner with or without the device attached, enabling enhancements not reasonably included due to incomplete knowledge during machine and control system 25 design, such as failure modes and operating windows.

Machine reliability increases because the device performs the following functions: detecting abnormal performance through intelligent analysis of the machine's state information; corrective actions based on information from the analysis and requests of other nonautomated actions such as operator intervention or service center support. The device may perform additional functions such as reconfiguring the machine or advising an operator of particular operating conditions. Examples of operating conditions include insuring maximum productivity of the machine for a particular job or advising the operator how to achieve productivity gains.

The device differs from an adaptive control system implementation, by not altering the control system 25 of the machine and subsequently not interfering with its real time operations. Attaching the device to the machine does not impede the machine's performance since the device operates independently. The device monitors and records information from the machine over extended periods of time detecting deviations in standard performance as well as usage patterns. The recorded information enables machines to be fine tuned to specific operating environments.

One implementation of the device is accomplished through combination of knowledge based system technologies, and monitoring and meta controlling machine state technologies. Components of the device include: a knowledge base 30; a knowledge processor 40; and a communication interface 50. The knowledge base provides the device with intimate knowledge of the machine which has been obtained from design experts and has been learned from field experience of a machine population. The knowledge base includes normal machine performance and normal operating limits, as well as machine specific information such as location, history and type of customer account.
