Abstract

In a xerographic copying system, where a wide-friction-belt (WFB) is used as a platen transport, there is occasionally an occurrence, in the field, that is classified as an unscheduled maintenance call. The requisite procedure, to bring an office machine back into operation, involves the cleaning of said transport belt. Accordingly, the present invention is directed at a method for reducing a premature failure in machine operation. The reduction is achieved by the incorporation of a full-width cleaning roll as part of the wide-friction-belt (WFB) assembly to prevent dirt degradation on the WFB. A modified electrostatic cleaning roll of the type disclosed in Xerox Corporation U.S. Patent 4,750,018 issued June 7,1988 to Arthur M. Gooray et al. is preferred.
