Abstract

In a thermal ink jet drop-on-demand printing process, ink droplets are ejected from a small nozzle toward a printing substrate. When droplets are not expelled for long periods of time, water evaporation causes deposits to build up on the interior surface of a nozzle which thereby block the passageway. Additionally, a dry atmosphere can also permit the occurrence of compositional changes in the ink, which will further impede the discharge of droplets.

In a thermal ink jet drop-on-demand printing process, ink droplets are ejected from a small nozzle toward a printing substrate. When droplets are not expelled for long periods of time, water evaporation causes deposits to build up on the interior surface of a nozzle which thereby block the passageway. Additionally, a dry atmosphere can also permit the occurrence of compositional changes in the ink, which will further impede the discharge of droplets.

Each event requires a maintenance operation to correct a clogged nozzle. Such procedures typically involve the priming or wiping of a nozzle in order to restore operation. Sometimes, maintenance drops are discharged at periodic intervals.

Maintenance drops are not used for printing, but they do serve to keep a nozzle supplied with fresh ink. The disadvantage stemming from their deployment is a corresponding requirement to incorporate a means for their disposal. Mechanical and space limitations, within an ink jet system, can pose a problem for the inclusion of an appropriate capturing device.
