Abstract

An annotator printhead for adding supplemental information to a copy sheet is disclosed. The printhead, a thermal Ink Jet marking device, is preferably mounted at the exit of a fuseddecurler in a xerographic printing machine. The thermal ink jet annotator enables color prints and custom addressing of the xerographic printing machine's output, by printing a swath of information in the form of text and / or graphics. Briefly,-printing machine 5, which is shown in Figure 1, has a photoconductive belt 10 which is charged at charging station A. Next, the charged belt is advanced through imaging station B where light reflected from a document on platen 14 creates an electrostatic latent image on the belt. The latent image then passes through development station C, which is subsequently transferred onto a sheet at transfer station D from paper trays 22, 24, or 26. The sheet bearing the transferred images is then fused to the sheet at fusing station E.

The additional Thermal Ink Jet annotation device (not shown) is best inserted in the paper path of machine 5 at the exit of fusing station E, before sheets are passed to duplex tray 30 or finishing station F. Since copy sheets are hot and dry at the exit of fusing station E, the ink jet process is enhanced because ink from the jets will dry faster and not offset to downstream paper transport members.
