Abstract

A sensing universal paper tray for use in electrophotographic printing and copying machines which is capable of electronically detecting and measuring the size of paper feed stock is disclosed. Paper handling products are currently available which have a single universal tray. However, paper size sensing in these products needs to be manually set by the user. Manually setting paper size is accomplished by adjusting a horizontal slide guide located in the rear of the paper tray. When the tray is in the feed position, the machine software senses the location of this horizontal guide, and determines the paper size from the detected paper stock coordinates.

The above user actuated task may cause many problems and user confusion. However, these problems can be eliminated by installing a SoftPotTM, available from Spectra Symbol Corp., or infinitely variable membrane potentiometer that is linked directly to an adjustable paper length guide 2 and an adjustable paper width guide 3 located in the sensing universal paper tray 1, as indicated in the figure.
