Abstract

A method for increasing the effective resolution of a Charged Coupled Device (CCD) array is disclosed. The properties of polarized light are used, wherein the plane of polarization is rotated electrically. A birefringement element shifts the image laterally in correspondence to a selected attitude of polarization. Thus, a CCD array is sequentially exposed to displaced images that subsequently double the number of address sites.
