Abstract

Disclosed is a negatively charged toner comprised of metal complexes based on metal complexes of salicylic acid and catechol with two ligands and a central metal, like aluminum, as a charge additive. Charge control agents based on metal complexes with salicylic acid are known (e.g. Bontron E-88), as are complexes based on catechol. The aluminum complex displays equivalent tribo charging to Bontron E-88 in an encapsulated toner. As a surface additive to a conventional toner the charge control agents exhibit superior admix properties to that of Bontron E-88.

The present invention is directed to toners with metal complex charge enhancing additives, which additives are obtained from the reaction of a mixture of a hydroxybenzoic acid and a base with a metal ion in the presence of an excess of a hydroxyphenol. The metal complex charge enhancing additives are believed to be ionic in nature and comprised of an anion with a central metal bonded to two different ligands, one hydroxybenzoic acid and one hydroxyphenol, and a counter cation of a proton, an alkaline metal ion or an ammonium ion.
