In addition, the large separation between colors can cause significant color to color registration errors due to relatively small variations in paper transport speed and the thermal coefficient of expansion of support hardware located between the drop generators.

The present invention proposes a multi-printhead compact ink jet of Type 1 architecture which utilizes a one piece aperture plate for all four printheads (full process color plus black) and uses a Traveling Wave Drop Generator with straight deflection plate design of the Slanted Ink Jet Print Bar concept to provide either highlight color or full process color capability.

Figures 1A through 1D illustrate the Traveling Wave Drop Generator concept and how straight deflection plates can be utilized to give a highly compact, simplified multi-color ink jet printhead. As shown in Figure lA, there is a single one piece Drop Generator body 10 which features one lengthwise bore 12 for each ink color. The fabrication of the bores can be achieved by techniques of gun drilling or casting. Each of these bores have their own acoustic drivers 16 and acoustic terminators 14.

Conceivably, the drivers 16 can share a common electrical supply source (not shown). The high, capacitively reactive current drawn by the drivers is reduced by the placement of a properly sized inductor across the drivers.
