In electrophotographic printing machines, the lifespan of the photoconductor is limited by scratches induced by background toner particles lodged between the bristles of a captive magnetic brush assembly.

This problem is alleviated by minimizing the amount of toner, in the cleaning brush, by increasing the toner transfer efficiency of the detoning rolls. Since many toners are magnetic, a magnet should be able to remove toner which is in contact with the cleaning brush.

The first embodiment of this disclosure is illustrated in the figure. In a conventional fashion, the captive magnetic brush assembly 10 rotates in the direction of arrow 12 to remove residual toner particles from the surface of photoconductor 20 and move said particles into contact with a plurality of detoning rolls 30. Suitable fixed magnets 40 are mounted to the inside surface of detoning rolls 30 to pull toner from the brush fibers of brush assembly 10 onto the rotation shell of detoning rolls 30.
