Abstract

Document size sensing is becoming an important feature in reproduction equipment. Generally, a charge coupled device (CCD) and corresponding lens are employed to sense the size of a document in a xerographic system. Document size sensing is becoming an important feature in reproduction equipment. Generally, a charge coupled device (CCD) and corresponding lens are employed to sense the size of a document in a xerographic system. Two requirements are necessary for satisfactory operation when an organic belted photoreceptor is used. They are:

1) all original documents, regardless of color, must exhibit a high contrast ratio, relative to a platen cover or an Automatic Document Handler (ADH) belt, to facilitate detectability.

2) low opacity (high transmittance) papers, such as "onion skin" or similarly thin papers must appear as a low density when backed by a colored platen cover or ADH belt.

A specular (mirror) backing meets these requirements. The specular backing offers a significant improvement in contrast and is easy to provide in a platen cover configuration. However, a specular backing has not been made available in a belt configuration. The drawback has been the diEculty in making it flexible, which is also a requirement of an ADH belt.
