Abstract

Vision systems currently used for vision inspection store data for statistical processing and/or display to an operator. Unlike conventional vision systems, closed loop vision system 5, shown in Figure 1, has real time feedback from inspection station 2 to assembly station 8. Vision inspection station 2 controls three dimensional vision system 4, which comprises an assembly of one or more cameras and lasers. Vision system 4 continuously inspects assembled units 6 to insure that required specifications are met. In the event assembled units 6 do not meet specification requirements, commands in the form of parameter setting update requests are immediately sent to assembly controller 8 through feedback loop 10. The direct commands sent from vision inspection station 2 to assembly controller 8 update parameter settings for elements 11 and 12 of units 14 currently being assembled in order to meet any new specification requirements. After updated parameter requests from vision inspection station. 2 are incorporated into current assembly settings in assembly controller 8, a confirmation notice for each updated parameter is sent to inspection station 2 from assembly station controller 8. Thus, by using closed loop vision system 5 time delays and human interactions are minimized, resulting in an optimized we11 controlled assembly process.
