Abstract

A highlight color module that can be installed and removed by a customer/user at will that adds highlight color capability to a black only printer is disclosed. Separation of printing functions in the printer architecture results in a modular design which minimizes cost and permits: flexible modularity; minimal cost increase to the base printer (black only); and a single color module which carries nearly all of the incremental cost of the added highlight color capability.

A highlight color module that can be installed and removed by a customer/user at will that adds highlight color capability to a black only printer is disclosed. Separation of printing functions in the printer architecture results in a modular design which minimizes cost and permits: flexible modularity; minimal cost increase to the base printer (black only); and a single color module which carries nearly all of the incremental cost of the added highlight color capability.

Separation of machine functions enables a cost effective design incorporating a black only printer with uncompromised black printing capability and a separate color module that a customer may installs as an option when selecting highlight color or multicolor capability. This modular approach is extendible to more than one color, for example, black plus two colors, and the like. Features and requirements of a preferred embodiment are shown in the Figures and described further below.

Sufficient space adjacent to the photoreceptor in an area just beyond the black development housing is reserved for the separate color development module and enclosure as shown in bold in Figure 1.

A modular interface, for both hardware and software is shown by heavy bold lines in Figure 2. The hardware interface consists of 2 to 4 fastening points, accurately positioned locating points (pins) to place the color module, and seating points to space the module units, especially the image bar (ROS, raster output scanner) and the development gap to set drum to roll spacing when the module is in use. The remaining part of the hardware interface is located on the inboard portion of the enclosure cavity and consists of air flow ports to secure toner emissions removal and cooling air flow...
