Abstract

A problem with certain commercially available pressure equilibrating breather hole designs on lubricated gear boxes of electric motors is oil seepage loss from lubrication splashing and capillary action. An improved breather hole plug design that overcomes the oil seepage loss problem uses a counter sink reservoir 1 in a breather plug 2 as shown in the Figure. The reservoir 1 contains oil seepage from the breather hole 3 until motor operation ceases at which time the oil returns to the gear box under gravity. The design reduces oil loss and keeps motor components free from oil seepage contamination.
