Abstract

A multimedia computer file management system that adopts an index metaphor for filing and retrieving documents is disclosed. Figure 1 shows an integrated multimedia system 2 that embodies the index card file management system which is resident on disk 12. Workstation 4 of system 2 having mouse 6 and mike 8, which is standalone or networked, is interfaced with video/audio unit 10, disk storage unit 12, scanner 14, printer 16, facsimile 18, telephone network 20 and computer network 22. Accordingly, the index card filing metaphor is portable and adaptable to any standalone or networked document storage and retrieval desktop system operating on any standard system platform.

Figure 2 shows the index card filing metaphor used by system 2. Index card icons 53, which are represented on workstation 4 using 3x5 inch index cards icons or windows, reference stored documents in index card database 54
resident on disk 12. Fields exist within the index cards to capture the title 48,
subject 49, authors 50, date 51 and keywords 52 of filed documents on disk 12.
Additional fields not shown can be incorporated into the index card such as, relevant document dates recording the authoring date and the last accessed or modified date of the document. The filing metaphor is additionally automated through the use of "optigrams" (not shown), which are a collection of steps and/or default values that are identified by a pre-programed ticket or icon.
