Abstract

Disclosed is a hazardous waste disposal control scheme useful in color xerographic marking machines. The scheme comprises selective quantitation of toner waste sump contents, for example, by color or toner composition, to determine when a limit of heavy metal ion content contained in certain pigment colorants is reached, thereby providing an easily implemented method for heavy metal waste control. Software calculates the amount of toner of each color entering the waste bottle from the image areas printed and known transfer efficiencies for each color. If the hazardous toner is not sufficiently diluted by non-hazardous toner and carrier, the software program triggers an indication that the waste sump bottle requires pickup by, for example, a technical field representative for appropriate handling and disposal of the heavy metal containing waste toner.
