In certain two component developer housings augers are used to transport developer material around the housing. Fresh toner is added at a single point in the developer material flow path. Augers usually do a poor job of dispersing and charging fresh toner that is added to the developer material. The toner tends to ride on top of the developer material as it flows down the length of the auger.

A developability control system may be programmed to make decisions about adding fresh toner at about every 5 or 6 auger pitches. For typical toner usages, fresh toner is being added only over a small portion of this time. If a toner dispenser is turned on at the beginning of each cycle and then turned off when the required amount of toner is dispensed, then large pulses of uncharged toner would be distributed in the developer housing. This may lead to poor toner charging and possible problems with background development of low charged toner.

To prevent these problems, the toner dispenser is run in a pulsed fashion during the 5 or 6 auger pitch cycle. In each cycle, the desired off time is calculated and is evenly divided between successive 100 msec on pulses. For example, if the dispenser should be on for 2 pitches in a 6 pitch cycle, then the dispenser is run for 100 msec and...
