Abstract

An intelligent paper cassette equipped with an Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EPROM) that communicates with the core processor of an electronic printing machine is disclosed. The intelligent paper cassette is designed to accommodate many different and often exotic paper stocks that typically challenge the paper feeding and paper handling apparatuses of the printing machine. Machine jam detectiodtime latitude is typically the sum of all individual operating windows for each paper property such as type, weight and stock. The EPROM of the disclosed intelligent cassette is programmed with a multitude of paper path timing, fuser temperature and transfer current set points which are known to be ideally suited to individual substrates. In essence, the improved cassette is provided with the identity of exotic stocks in order that required special timing information is adapted to the machine paper and feeding apparatuses so that machine paper handling reliability is improved. The proposed intelligent paper cassette can be used in a similar manner with xerographic elements such as fuser temperature and transfer current to further improve machine reliability and copy quality. Additionally, a machine user would be allowed to interact with the intelligent cassette by selecting optimum machine set points for any one substrate (or paper stock) by identifying, for example, a manufacturer's paper stock number or by custom programming of specific data through the user interface of the machine. In summary, the intelligent cassette is equipped with an EPROM that has pertinent pre-programmed information which insures more reliable operation of exotic stocks passing through the printing machine. The intelligent cassette communicates with the machine's core processor to detennine how information for exotic stocks can be used to improve overall machine performance.
