An improved method of programming paper trays in an electronic printing machine is disclosed. The improved method selects paper trays on a job segment by job segment basis rather than on a page by page basis. With programmable paper trays selectable on a job segment basis, a pattern of alternations can be defined between paper trays. Additionally job segments can be stapled together every fixed number of sheets to generate multiple stapled job segments within a single document.
