Many xerographic copiers have a Book Mode copying feature by which the user must register a bound document in the center, of the rear edge, of a document glass for split scan reproduction. This feature is designed to eliminate a requirement to flip a book around for registration of op osing pages at a

right-hand page, or both is achieved with each page of the original document being produced on an individual sheet of copy paper. In practice, however, the Book Mode copying feature is not an easy one to use because it requires perfect registration, of the center of a book, at the registration point on the document glass. An error in perfect registration arises from a very small inner margin that many books possess when they are opened and disposed flatly on the document glass. The small inner margin is due to the curvature of the pages at the binding. The thickness of a book also prevents the user from having a good view of where the center point between the pages is located with respect to the registration mark on the rear edge of the document glass. Thus, for many books, an error of 1/4 inch in registration on the document glass can result in image loss.
