Abstract

A document multi-feed error is defined as feeding more than one original image bearing sheet to an imaging station at the same time in an automatic document handler of an electronic printing or copying machine. An undetected multi-feed may impose a problem for an electronic imaging system which incorporates electronic precollation. Since original documents are typically only scanned once, a multi-feed error will result in one or more missing pages for every set of subsequent copies produced from an original scanned document set. In the case of double sided or duplex originals, the multi-feed error may be prevented and detected by insuring that a number of pages fed for side one exactly matches a number of pages fed for side two. However, for single sided originals which are only scanned once, a multi-feed error may otherwise go undetected and may destroy the integrity of an entire printing job.

A solution to the multi-feed error problem is realized by using a document position sensing algorithm. A sensor measures the size of an occlusion or footprint created by a document on the imaging station platen, and thereby determines whether there has been a "shingling" or imbricating type document handler misfeed.
