Abstract

A problem encountered in the operation of thermal ink jet printers is the formation of deposits on the surfaces of the heaters located in channels as they are pulsed. Sometimes the deposits are heavy enough to impede bubble nucleation thereby creating unacceptably low drop volumes of ink.

A problem encountered in the operation of thermal ink jet printers is the formation of deposits on the surfaces of the heaters located in channels as they are pulsed. Sometimes the deposits are heavy enough to impede bubble nucleation thereby creating unacceptably low drop volumes of ink.

Inks prepared using dyes which are waterfast may exhibit kogation in TIJ printheads. One example of this behavior is found in the ink formulation containing Aizen Black dye, Diethylene glycol, and water. It has been demonstrated that the addition of Lomar D dispersing Agent, and N-methyl pyrrolidone greatly reduces the kogation product on the heater surface.
