A decurler penetration shaft 1 with an integral stiffener bar 2 enables tight control over the deflection extreme of the penetration shaft 1 and simplifies maintenance by incorporating the penetration shaft 1, bearing points 3 and the stiffener bar 2 in easily accessible assembly as illustrated in Figure 1.

A decurler penetration shaft 1 with an integral stiffener bar 2 enables tight control over the deflection extreme of the penetration shaft 1 and simplifies maintenance by incorporating the penetration shaft 1, bearing points 3 and the stiffener bar 2 in easily accessible assembly as illustrated in Figure 1.

Decurler belts exert approximately 22 pounds of force on the penetration shaft 1 at the maximum shaft to belt adjustment. Penetration shaft deflection can be excessive if the center of the shaft is unsupported. A saddle bushing 4 with a stiffener bar support reduces deflection to a minimum thereby preventing paper feed problems.

The proposed design captures all requirements for control of penetration shaft deflection, quick removal of field serviceable items and tight control of assembly tolerances in a simple package.

The stiffener bar 2 is capable of deflection control many times greater than an unsupported shaft. Tolerance control is achieved through the control of location dimensions on end bearings, saddle bushings and stiffener bar. Since the stiffener bar is a mounting member for all...
