Abstract

In certain Xerox copiers, the fuser module can be moved in and out on slides or rails to enable easy access for jammed paper clearance. At the same time it may be necessary to release load between the fuser rolls in order to separate them and free the copy. This may typically be achieved by rotating a shaft which operates a cam or some other suitable mechanism.

In certain Xerox copiers, the fuser module can be moved in and out on slides or rails to enable easy access for jammed paper clearance. At the same time it may be necessary to release load between the fuser rolls in order to separate them and free the copy. This may typically be achieved by rotating a shaft which operates a cam or some other suitable mechanism.

The present proposal, shown in Figure 1, employs a peg and helical slot device which rotates a shaft 1 to open and close the fuser rolls. This reduces the number of operations for the user, and ensures that the rolls are closed when the module is returned.

As shaft 1 is moved along in direction of arrow 2 by the motion of the fuser module, pin 3 engages in slot 4 which causes shaft 1 to rotate as indicated by arrow 5. This type of mechanism automatically opens the rolls when the module is withdrawn and closes them when the module is returned. Hence, the number of copier user operations during jam clearance is reduced.

The same principle could also be employed in similar situations, such as paper feed rollers in a copier.
