In a liquid color copier or printer, applying toner to a photoreceptor therein at a precise moment is a critical part of the imaging step. Disclosed is a system wherein liquid toner is continually circulated within each developer station until required to apply ink to the photoreceptor and provides numerous advantages.

Each developer housing in, for example, a process color printer, is comprised of a development electrode, metering roll, metering blade, fluid input manifold, fluid bypass gate and fluid sump. The development system is designed so that all parts are interchangeable and simple to assemble. In a normal operating mode, the marking fluid or liquid toner is continually recirculating through each developer station, but does not reach the top of the development electrode until the fluid bypass gate is closed. Using this method enables the ability to quickly turn on and off toner development in the inter copy region without contaminating the other toners.
