Abstract

Toner reclaim is becoming more important in electrophotographic systems for three reasons. First, since customer toner costs are increasing for color toners, it is beneficial to provide customers with more copies per pound of toner. Second, from an environmental standpoint, there is an elevated conscientiousness about the amount of waste generated; a toner reclaim system substantially reduces the toner waste per unit of copy volume. Third, in an effort to reduce the size of an electrophotographic copying or printing machine, a toner reclaim system reduces the space required for a waste toner bottle.

A carousel cleaning device for electrophotographic systems is proposed. As

shown in the accompanying Figure, the device is used in a multipass transfer system, wherein only a single color toner is developed per image pixel. Carousel system 10 is designed to hold N (number of colors) cleaners 23,24,25, and 26 all pivotally mounted by a holding means 28 on a drum 27. The cleaners can be locked at a cleaning station position and at a home position. Drum 27 moves in a direction indicated by arrow...
