Abstract

Proposed is a high contact feed roll capable of increasing the contact force between the roll and the surface of a paper sheet so as to improve the reliability of sheet feeding in a document reproduction or printing system. Referring to the figure, there is shown a feed roll brush 10 rotating in the direction of arrow 12 to advance a top sheet from a stack of sheets 14. More specifically, the feed roll brush preferably includes a plurality of elastomer-coated bristles, wherein the coating not only increases the contact surface between the roll and the sheet surface, but the coefficient of friction as well. Thus, as the bristles contact the top surface of a sheet in the "nip" region 16, the sheet is advanced from the surface of the stack. It is further contemplated that bristle stiffness may be varied in order to provide for significant latitude in the normal force applied thereby. The increase in contact area resulting from the proposed feed roll brush will enable the use of lower coefficient of friction elastomers than are normally employed for feed roll surfaces. The lower coefficient materials, it is believed, will reduce the propensity for contamination and wear, resulting in feed roll life increases and greater latitude in the manufacturing process.
