Abstract

Spring removal tools normally have a hook for tensioning (pulling) the spring. These devices must be specially designed to accommodate the spring tang diameter, tensioning force, and attachment point. Since they do not have a feature for capturing the spring, an eye injury or loss of the spring can occur. Furthermore, heavy duty springs require excessive force for removal and installation. Off-the-shelf tools do not provide sufficient mechanical advantage for service personnel who have small physiques.

Since they do not have a feature for capturing the spring, an eye injury or loss of the spring can occur. Furthermore, heavy duty springs require excessive force for removal and installation. As shown in the Figure, a spring remover / applicator 10 is fabricated from a plier tool that includes a locking mechanism 18. This is accomplished by machining a specified diameter from the jaw section of the tool. Through screw adjustment mechanism 12, various sizes of springs 14 and spring tangs 16 can be accommodated and captured with locking mechanism 18 for safe and easy removal and installation. Spring remover / applicator 10 solves the above- mentioned problems by capturing the spring 14 within its jaws, which prevents the spring from becoming airborne and thereby avoiding an eye injury or loss of the spring.
