Abstract

A method is disclosed for an improved method of measuring photoreceptor cleaner brush radial shrinkage. In electrostatographic printing and copying systems having cleaner subsystems that utilize electrostatic and/or mechanical brushes, the brush to photoreceptor interference is critical to cleaning performance. Typically, after several hundred thousand copies, the cleaner brush fibers begin to deform by bending in the rotational direction. This deformation is otherwise known as "set", which when it occurs, reduces the brush to photoreceptor interference, and thereby reduces the performance of the cleaner subsystem.

A method is disclosed for an improved method of measuring photoreceptor cleaner brush radial shrinkage. In electrostatographic printing and copying systems having cleaner subsystems that utilize electrostatic and/or mechanical brushes, the brush to photoreceptor interference is critical to cleaning performance. In order to test for cleaner brush aging, brush fiber set has typically been measured by an optical comparator. However, this is a relatively quite lengthy process. Furthermore, the brush is not likely to be at the same temperature as it is during machine operation, thereby causing inconsistencies in the testing outcomes.
