Abstract

An auger type dispenser for dispensing toner from a toner sump in a xerographic copier can be utilized as a gauge to monitor quantities of toner leaving the sump. Where the quantity of toner leaving the sump is being replaced or replenished by toner from a toner bottle, then by counting the auger revolutions and knowing the capacity of the sump as well as the volume of toner displaced by the auger, the amount of toner left in the bottle can be calculated. This amount of toner left in the bottle can be tracked by a software program, and displayed on a user interface of the copier for the operator's information.

Ordinarily, toner sensors used in xerographic copiers are each a toner-present type sensor for sensing the amount of toner present in a toner sump. Unfortunately, however, this gives the customer no warning of when he is running low on toner in a toner bottle for replenishing the sump. A mechanical page for indicating a level of toner left in the bottle would likely be very expensive, and probably not be sufficiently accurate.

Toner control in copiers is usually achieved by measuring an electric current associated with the image being developed with toner, and then dispensing from the sump into the developer, an appropriate replacement amount of toner by rotating an auger a specified number of turns per unit of the electric current measured. This type of toner control provides relatively accurate control of toner concentration and of triboelectric charge levels in the developer housing.
