Abstract

Disclosed is a low cool curl microwave dryable ink suitable for use in Thermal Ink Jet (TIJ) printing applications. The ink formulations use triethanolamine (TEA) in high concentration 015 wt"/.) as the anti-curl additive and sodium bromide as the coupling salt. TEA is inexpensive, relatively nontoxic and readily available. TEA is a satisfactory solvent for the sodium bromide @Jar) coupling salt. Test inks, in large solid area draw down prints, remain flat after ambient drying for 24 hours. This result is as good as inks with, for example, 20% TMP (trhethylolpropane).

An exemplary formulation in weight percent follows: 20% triethanolamine; 17% BASF X-34 liquid dye; 3% Direct RED 227 liquid (10%); 2.5% sodium bromide; 0.05% PEO
18.5K, and 0.05% DOWICIL 200.

Relevant physical properties of the formula are: Surface Tension 52.0dydcm; Viscosity
2.67 Cp; Conductivity 16.4mS/cm; and pH 9.1.

About 7.5 wt % TMP may be substituted for the same amount of TEA to yield an ink with similar performance and bulk properties. The unadjusted pH of this ink fornulation is expected to be usefbl with, for example, waterfast color dyes.

The TEA based formulations are suitable for use in TIJ application at resolutions of 600 dpi and above.
