Disclosed is a combination device that uses a common exposure system, for example, a laser and associated optics, to either simultaneously or separately image to a direct plate and a laser xerographic proofer. The device can be either black only or color. A direct-to- plate technology is disclosed in, for example, U.S. Patent No. 5,102,756.

The laser and optics provide the ability to simultaneously or individually image direct plates and a photoreceptor for creating digital proofs fiom the same image file. The processing advantages of the direct image plates can also create a market for creating plates and proofs in a studio rather than in a convention production printing setting. By enabling the simultaneous plating and proofing, the creator catl validate the imaged information prior to release for printing.
