A proposed method of using a high speed print mode for a Thermal Ink Jet (TIJ) printer is disclosed. There are four print heads, three for color and one for black. Increased black through-put is achieved by creating a "fast mode" black text. As used in this description, "fast mode" black refers to a combination of true black and process black pixels.

Thermal ink jet printers offer an opportunity for customers to replace their black xerographic laser printers with a desk top product having both black and color capabilities. The print cartridge has a maximum fuing rate and there is a limit to a printing swath width that normally prevents the TIJ print head from competing with the speed of a laser printer. This disclosure proposes a means for increasing the speed of a TIJ device by way of a multiple print; parallel print head design of three colors (cyan, yellow, and magenta) plus black. In order to achieve increased black through-put, the image comprises interleaved (or checkerboard) true black, plus process black pixels in a single pass. This approach increases the speed twice that of normal operation.
