For example, a digital printer running in a highlight color mode at 110 Prints Per Minute (PPM) is also capable of running in a black only mode at 220 PPM with minor operator intervention and the incorporation of several automatic machine control functions.

Proposed is a method for operating a high speed printer at different speeds depending on whether black only or black plus high light color is desired. For example, a digital printer running in a highlight color mode at 110 Prints Per Minute (PPM) is also capable of running in a black only mode at 220 PPM with minor operator intervention and the incorporation of several automatic machine control functions.

In embodiments, the method comprises providing two xerographic imaging stations in close proximity to a photoreceptor belt. Each imaging station consists of one or two charging devices (as appropriate), an exposure device (e-g., ROS), an electrometer, and a non-interactive developer means, such as an electroded donor roll. Color image formation for process color is typically image on image whereas color image formation for highlight color is typically image beside image. Image beside image makes the charging function simpler than image on image charging. The first imaging station charges, exposes and develops a black image and the second imaging station charges, exposes, and develops a color image to produce a black plus one highlight color print at a rate of 110 PPM.
