Abstract

The present coating chamber configuration utilizes an open end into which a planetary transport having substrates mounted thereto is placed. As the transport seats into position, it provides a sealing surface that forms an air tight chamber. Each time the transport is withdrawn, the chamber is opened and the atmosphere escapes. The atmosphere may be contained by adding an enclosing disc to the chamber's open end. With further modification, the proposed disc may be converted to an exhaust plenum. The exhaust plenum provides a straight line, laminar flow which improves lengthy humidification cycle time and poor uniform purging originally caused by an input and output at the same chamber location.

ENHANCED ROTARY ATOMIZATION COATING CHAMBER (CONT'D)

Figure 1 Schematically illustrates an enclosing disc 10 which may be added to the present chamber configuration. An aperture 20 is located at every location where a mandrel (not shown) penetrates the disc 10. A plurality of retractable doors 22 are mounted to disc 10 so that each of the apertures 20 has a closure. The doors 22 can be remotely operated when mandrels are entering or leaving the chamber. The aperture diameter is slightly larger than the substrates (not shown) mounted on the mandrels.

Figure 2 schematically illustrates the proposed modifcation that converts the enclosing disc 10 to an exhaust plenum. In Figure 2, the enclosing disc 10 further contains a plurality of concentric intake ports 26 and at least two exhaust ducts 28. The retractable doors (not shown) are located on the back side of disc 10.

Figure 3 schematically illustrates a rotary atomization coating chamber 12 having the enclosing disc 10 abutted to the...
