Abstract

In the assembly of a thermal ink jet cartridge, a common method of Printed Wiring Board (PWB) attachment to the printer cartridge is the use of double-sided adhesive tape. The tape is laminated to the printed circuit board typically at board manufacture. This liner must be removed with tweezers or other mechanical methods.

REMOVAL OF ADHESIVE LINER FROM A THERMAL JET PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD

(CONT'D)

In the assembly of a thermal ink jet cartridge, a common method of Printed Wiring Board (PWB) attachment to the printer cartridge is the use of double-sided adhesive tape. The tape is laminated to the printed circuit board typically at board manufacture. This liner must be removed with tweezers or other mechanical methods.

This liner removal process can be automated by the following procedure. Referring to figures 1 and 2, the PWB 10 is held by a mechanical pick-up head 12. This head holds the PWB with a small vacuum cup 14 and two (2) locating pins 16. The PWB head 10 is lowered vertically to a striper tape mechanism 20. The tape mechanism comprises a reel 22 containing a supply of adhesive tape 24, tape 24 characterized by forming a stronger adhesive bond than the PWB liner. The tape 24 unreels and is wound around urethane roller 26, feed rollers 28, 30, and used tape take-up reel 32. The PWB 10 is held by the head 12 with the adhesive liner side towards the striper tape mechanism 20. The head lowers and contacts tape 24. Urethane rol...
