Color copiers which use a "marker edit" feature, which allow a user to select distinct areas of a monochrome original for printing in color in the resulting copy, can select the highlight color from a "bank', of, for example, 10 colors which are available on the user's screen.

Typically, the selectable highlight colors are predetermined at manufacture and cannot be changed. However, it may be desirable for user to want to use a color from another original document as a highlight color: the difficulty arises when the user wants to duplicate a color from a first document as a highlight color.

According to the proposed method, a user who has a hard copy bearing an area of color which the user wants to use as a highlight color for subsequent copies can use the edit pad feature, which is a common feature to color copiers, to indicate on the original the areas on the original having the color desired to be used as a highlight color in the future. The area having the desired color is indicated with the edit pad, and then the original having the desired color is simply scanned in to the color copier. The color copier that records the color which is indicated on the source document, and enters this recorded color into the "bank" of selectable highlight colors.
