Abstract

Disclosed is a method and apparatus for indicating the operational status of xerographic, thermal ink jet, and relating printing machines. In embodiments, in a user interface display an icon shows the operating state of the machine using a universally recognizable "traffic light." The status of the machine is indicated by the color of the light. A red light indicates the machine has a critical error that does not permit continued operation, for example, a paper jam, empty toner or ink, and the like. A yellow light indicates a non-critical error wherein the machine is still functional but will require attention in the near future, for example, low toner, low paper, and the like. A green light indicates the machine is fully functional. In other embodiments, the traffic light icon status indicator concept can be expanded to include, for example, substatus indicators including numeric code or symbolic indicators to further defme or specify the machine state within a given color light status. The color lights and substatus indicators on the traffic light can be implemented, for example, with light emitting diodes, liquid crystal displays, and the like. On more sophisticated user interfaces, with for example a pointing device capability, like a mouse or touch sensitive screen, by selecting the indicated traffic light there is displayed additional information concerning the machine status, for example, in pull-down or pop-up menu format. The traffk light status indicating icon provides for enhanced perception of machine performance and needs, and improved customer satisfaction.
