Abstract

Disclosed is improved low toner level sensor for use in electrophotographic printing and copying machines, as found for example, in Xerox Corporation Model 5100@ machine. The improvement comprises providing a "clean mode" of operation by applying second intermittent or alternating large signal to an existing piezoelectric reed element to create a sufficiently large vibrational force to free caked toner from the sensor thereby avoiding false "full" indications. The second signal voltage can be provided from the same source as the primary sensor voltage by periodic toggling between the primary and secondary voltage levels.
