ink occurs during a single pass of the printhead with the manifold being replenished during printing. Manifold flushing happens before introduction of a second color or ink density. The small manifold volumes prevent a large loss of ink.

Referring to Figure 1, ink source 10 prints two levels of black using printheads 20 and two levels of magenta using a segmented printhead 22. Carrier flowing through inlet 12 enters the manifolds 21 supplying black ink to printheads 20. At the same time, black dye enters manifolds 21 through inlet 14. Varying the ratio of carrier and dye produces 32 levels of gray. Similarly, carrier flowing through inlet 13 enters the manifolds 23 supplying magenta colored ink to the segmented printhead 22.
