Abstract

A coupling having two self-aligning arms for constraining a drive roll carriage and thereby translating an idler axially with the drive roll during registration correction is disclosed. As shown in FIG. 1, a drive roll 16 connected to shaft 18 moves axially in the direction of arrow 20 to correct a top to bottom registration error. An idler assembly 22 utilizes two plastic arms, which will be discussed hereinafter with reference to FIG. 2, to constrain a carriage extension 12.

A coupling having two self-aligning arms for constraining a drive roll carriage and thereby translating an idler axially with the drive roll during registration correction is disclosed. Referring to FIG. 2, the closely toleranced arms 10 provide minimum axial end play and are self aligning to the assembly 22. This self alignment is accomplished by using two spherical mating surfaces that are pre-loaded with a compression spring (not shown). During a jam clearance, idler roll 16 is rotated open for system access. Assembly 22 rotates during this procedure, but does not become disengaged from shaft 18.
