Abstract

N-Octyl pyrrolidinone imparts potent penetrant properties on printing media such as plain office paper when present in ink jet inks in amounts of about 1 percent by weight. This material is thus effective at lower loadings than comparable materials; for example, cyclohexylpyrrolidinone enables similar penetrant properties when present in ink jet inks in amounts of about 6 percent by weight. N-Octyl pyrrolidinone also has desirable en-vironmental, health, and safety characteristics.

N-Octyl pyrrolidinone also has desirable en- vironmental, health, and safety characteristics.

N-Octyl pyrrolidinone can exhibit a tendency to phase separate when present in aqueous inks. By incorporating N-methyl pyrrolidinone into the ink along with the N-octyl pyrrolidinone, a homogeneous aqueous ink can be obtained. These ink ingredients are also compatible with polyquaternary conductive polymers, which are desirable ink ingredients. In a preferred embodiment, about 20 parts by weight of N-methyl pyrrolidinone are present in the ink for every 1 part by weight of N-octyl pyrrolidinone.

EXPERIMENTAL

An ink composition was prepared by simple mixing of the following ingredients:
