Abstract

Disclosed is a method of multiplexing ink jet drivers where all of the logic is removed from a disposable print head and placed in the printer. This is done without a signifcant increase in the number of leads to the cartridge. Other advantages include increased maximum operating temperature, lower overall cost, and increased immunity to noise generated when switching high heater currents.

MULTIPLEXED INK JET DRIVERS (C0NT"D)

The accompanying figure schematically illustrates a configuration comprising 4 banks of 16 ink jet heaters. Four ink jet heaters are fired at one time. External circuitry (not shown) applies a first voltage to terminals 10, 12, 14, and 16 for selecting the appropriate banks 20, 30,40, and 50. A second voltage is then applied to terminals 60, 62, 64, and 66. The second voltage fires the ink jet heaters 70,72,74, and 76 from the selected bank.
