Ink jet printing is very sensitive to the side of the plain paper recording media on which the recording occurs. Paper has two distinct sides; one is the felt side, and the other is the wire or sizing side. The best print quality is achieved when printing occurs on the felt side.

One way to identlfy the felt side is to pass the paper between two opposing spring-loaded metal shoes so as to leave a mark on each side of the paper at the point of contact with the metal shoes. The darker of the two marks indicates the felt side, and the operator loads the paper accordingly.
