Abstract

Disclosed is a machine resident, customer programmable timer that automatically powers an electrophotographic printing machine on or off at times predetermined by the customer. The programmable timer function is implemented by way of the machine's Central Processing Unit (CPU) or some other continually powered machine element that monitors a real time clock. In this manner, the machine may be programmed to turn on prior to the customer's arrival at a work site. Thus, the machine is warmed up and ready for immediate operation when the customer arrives. Similarly, the machine may be programmed to turn off at a predetermined time to provide an energy savings benefit.

In addition to monitoring a real time clock, the programmable timer also tracks the day of the week and corrects for such occurrences as leap years and daylight savings time. The programmable time includes a manual override and a battery backup such that programmed information is not lost during power outages. An automatic copy quality adjustment could also be incorporated into this feature.
