Abstract

Disclosed is a Bead Removal Device (BRD) for use in a Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) installed on an electrophotographic printing machine. In conventional, two-component development, various methods have been utilized to prevent carrier beads from escaping from the developer housing. Carrier beads that adhere to the photoreceptor surface are known to cause several print quality defects. Emissions from the developer housing additionally create a dirty machine making for an unhappy customer.

To counter developer housing bead emissions, a BRD is often added to the machine. The purpose of the BRD is to remove beads from the photoreceptor by capturing them in a magnetic field; often with a rotating sleeve that transports beads away from the photoreceptor surface and returning them back to the developer housing. The Xerox 5090 Printer, for example, employs a developer housing using a BRD consisting of a magnet inside a rotating aluminum knurled shell. There are, however, several advantages for incorporating a BRD with no moving parts.
