Abstract

Disclosed is the use of a row of optical sensors at the finishing station of an electrophotographic copier or printer to detect the presence of staples. This is accomplished by comparing the image of the edge of a finished copy set with a preset pattern that may be the image of the first set in the job. If the patterns do not match, then an algorithm assumes there has been a stapler failure. A message is conveyed to the operator or the machine is shut down until the staple can be fixed.
