Disclosed is a digital print activity monitor that displays graphic representations of the activity of a particular electrophotographic printing machine in a variety of formats on a user's Personal Computer (PC).

At the beginning of the work day, many workers in an office environment log on to personal computers to read electronic mail messages. There is often a significant amount of messages, and many of them require printing for a variety of reasons. The user often prints documents after reading them and making a print, file, or delete decision. This is usually done even if those hard copies are not needed immediately. As a result, there tends to be peak periods of heavy print activity. This in turn, creates an ineffective situation as users go to the printer and find their output buried under a pile of other user's outputs, or worse yet, in a job queue forcing them to come back later on second and third trips.

The digital print activity monitor tracks the activity of a particular printer, and displays its current print status on the user's PC or alternatively, it displays a historical model showing activity throughout a typical day. The advantage is that when heavy use is taking place the user may opt to send documents to the printer at a low usage time, allowing for a short wait and a perhaps a single trip to pick them up.
