Disclosed is a superior Cyan-Magenta-Yellow (CMY) acid dye color set for improved gamut inks for use in, for example, Thermal Ink Jet (TIJ) printers and related printing devices. Exemplary CMY formulation comprise combinations of Acid Red 249 (AR-249) with Acid Blue 9 and Acid Yellow 23. A specific magenta formulation follows: 25% PJM1 (ProJet Magenta, AR-249 available from Zenca Colors); 10% V110 (Varikem 110 coagulant); 15% DowanolTM TPM; 10% sulfolane; 3% ammonium chloride; 0.5% TRIS (trishydroxymethylaminomethane); 0.35% EDTA; 0.5% PEO (from Polysciences Cat. No. 04686); and 0.1% DowicilTM 150/200. The inks can be prepared by combining the ingredients and roll milling from about 10 to about 60 minutes, and then filtering (0.2 micron pore size) under pressure. The resulting inks have surface tensions of about 30 to 50 dyneskm, conductivities of about 30 to 40 milli-mhos, pHs near neutral, and viscosities of about 3 cps at 25 "C. The formulations are particularly well suited for obtaining superior color gamut, water fastness, stability, and superior print characteristics relative to many commercial TIJ products.
