Disclosed are inks containing a triazine compound as a buffering agent. These inks provide improved neutral and near neutral pH ink formulations for use in, for example, Thermal Ink Jet (TIJ) printers and related printing devices. A preferred triazine compound is 1,2,5-Trimethylhexahydro-1,3,5-triazine (TMTA). At a pH of about 6.5 to about 7.8, the ink formulations impart excellent buffering capacity. An exemplary formulation comprises: 63% water to balance; 5% tetramethylammonium hydroxide; 1.3% squaric acid; 0.9% 1,2,5-trimethylhexahydro-1,3,5-triazine (TMTA); 0.0493% EDTA; 0.051% PEO (from Polysciences, Cat. No. 04686); 0.1% DowicilTM 150/200; 15.8% sulfolane;
0.99% Triton" X-100; 9.03% Varikem 110 coagulant; 1.005% fluorescein dye, sodium salt (70% actives); and 2.83% ProJet Red OAM available from Zenca Colors. The inks can be prepared by combining the ingredients and roll milling from about 10 to about 60 minutes, and then filtering (0.2 micron pore size) under pressure. The resulting inks have surface tensions of about 30-50 dynedcm, conductivity of about 10-30 milli-mhos, pHs near neutral, and viscosities of about 1.9 cps at 25 "C.
