Abstract

Disclosed is a method for automatically configuring a network device, such as an electrophotographic printing machine, based on the Service Advertising Protocol (SAP) to determine the correct frame type for Novell@ communications. The method broadcasts queries in each of the supported frame types, collects all responses, and then selects for use the frame type of the closest server. Automatic configuration is achieved without a prior knowledge of the network environment.
